What are the top three highlights of your life?

  1. Attending the Universidad de las Americas Pueblo in Mexico

  2. Hiking the Andes in Peru and topping Machu Picchu–I was the only “old

man” invited by a bunch of 20-somethings.

  3. Taking a week-long sailing trip to and from Dry Tortugas, Florida–I fished

and camped with three boats full of Boy Scouts.

What fascinating highlights! Tell us more about attending college in Mexico and your adventure to Dry Tortugas with the Boy Scouts?

I discovered the University on a vacation trip. It was a brand-new campus in the middle of an archeological dig (they had just unearthed the world’s largest pyramid). Classes were taught in both Spanish and English, the student population was worldwide, and tuition and living was so inexpensive I couldn’t resist! I climbed an inactive snow-capped volcano named Popo that was nearby while I lived there, too!

I was an Assistant Boy Scout Leader, and one of the few leaders who would go on the camping trips with the boys. We took three sailboats from Fort Myers to the Dry Tortugas and back, and we sailed mostly at night across the Gulf so it wasn’t so hot. There was plenty of food packed, but we didn’t eat much of it due to all the fresh fish the boys caught throughout the trip. We toured the ruins of Fort Jefferson where the doctor known for assisting John Wilkes Booth in the shooting of Abraham Lincoln was imprisoned, we witnessed turtles hatch and run for the water, and we boarded and toured a shrimp boat.
